Fires in modern residential homes have become the most dangerous fires to fight, according to research presented last week at Firehouse World in San Diego.

The workshop was presented by Battalion Chief Peter VanDorpe and Firefighter/EMT James Dalton, both of the Chicago Fire Department and partners of Underwriters Laboratories.

A fire that investigators believed started in the rear of a bar spread and destroyed four downtown businesses in Vandalia early on Tuesday.

An investigation into the fire, which was discovered shortly after 1 a.m., by the Office of the State Fire Marshal is continuing.

The Vandalia Volunteer Fire Department was on scene within four minutes, and requested mutual aid assistance from the volunteer fire departments in Brownstown and Ramsey.

The buildings destroyed in the fire housed a bar, carpet store, tax and accounting service,

Denver FD trains for Ice Rescues

The Denver Fire Department recently purchased new inflatable rafts to assist firefighters with ice rescues. The new rafts were strategically placed on fire trucks around the city. The department's underwater rescue team recently spent the better part of January and early February training firefighters on the use of the new rafts. Fire officals say that their busy time for ice rescues is coming up as the ice in local lakes begins to thaw.

The West Babylon Fire Department was activated for an automatic fire alarm at the South Bay elementary school at 22:28 hours on Thursday, February 18, 2010.

2nd Asst Chief Pete McArdle first on scene advised "smoke showing", 1st Asst. Chief Jim Campbell and 3rd Asst. Chief Chrissy Manzi arrived on scene, and after a quick size up the Chiefs discovered heavy fire on the north side of the building. Chief Campbell immediately transmitted working fire and asked BCFA to re-tone call as such.

A man was shocked with a Taser gun and taken into custody Thursday after police said he tried to steal a fire truck.

The incident occurred at about 2:30 p.m. on the 2700 block of North Bend Road.

Firefighters were responding to a medical call when the man came out of a home and began acting strange. Officers said the man jumped in a fire truck and revved the engine, but could not put the truck in gear.

Jan. 13--AMERICUS -- A GMC Suburban collided with a Sumter County fire truck at around 11:45 a.m. Tuesday at the intersection of Tripp and Lamar streets, causing no-to-minor injuries to the Suburban driver and no injuries to the firefighters, but resulting in major traffic congestion for about a half an hour.

Jan. 13--Billy Rhoads didn't think twice as he grabbed his flak jacket and radio and rushed to the scene at Fort Hood.

But the fire chief for the nation's largest military base said his 26 years on the job couldn't prepare him for what he saw.

"You can train all day long to handle mass casualty incidents," he said Tuesday. "What you can't do is be prepared for what you're going to see when you pull up on something like this."

An elderly Pittsburgh woman says she called for help with her furnace, and when firefighters from Station 13 left her house, a bag with $22,000 was gone.

WTAE Channel 4's Shannon Perrine reported that the woman -- who is in her 80s -- said she called 911 when her furnace went out and she couldn't get it started again. Firefighters arrived right away and went into the basement and got the furnace working again, according to a Pittsburgh police report.
